Access + opportunity + creativity changes lives.
We Wield the Hammer exists to identify, train, track and support young women of African descent who might not otherwise choose a career as a metalsmith. WWTH seeks to offer opportunities for artistic equity, economic empowerment and access to a vocation which is very often traditionally unavailable to women, particularly marginalized women and girls both here in the U.S. and abroad. The training program begins the process of leveling the playing field in many ways, most especially at the entry point of skill building.
WWTH was founded in 2019 in Oakland, CA, by metalsmith and arts educator Karen Smith, who was inspired to start the program after an apprenticeship in Dakar, Senegal. Karen was a sensation as the only woman in her program, in a country where the craft of metalsmithing traditionally passes from father to son and the saying goes "women do not wield the hammer." Her passion is to bring this vocation to women and girls of African descent around the globe. The project is a training program that teaches the fundamentals of metalsmithing; the course is a an 8-week session designed to teach fabrication using precious metals. Through this course, WWTH students learn the art and practice using copper, brass and sterling silver. Graduates of the program can then go on to apprentice with local jewelers or even start their own businesses.
Colorful, diamond-packed, and showcasing the skillfulness of the artists who wielded each ring, THE AUGUSTA stack is named for Harlem Renaissance sculptor and teacher Augusta Savage. Augusta's legacy as a black female artist continues to inspire We Wield the Hammer in its mission to bring metalsmithing education to young women of African descent. The Augusta ring stack is valued at $10,745, and you can purchase a raffle ticket here.
