Jessie Z: We are so pumped to have you back at ESQUELETO for a trunk show in October, can you tell us a bit about the collection you’ll be showcasing?
Scosha: I’m thrilled to be back again this year! I will be presenting the Scosha 2018 Spring Summer Collection featuring exciting new styles that focus on fun ‘jewel’ stones and colors. I’ll also have some incredible new pieces from my new fine jewelry range that I can’t wait to show you.
Jessie Z: The Scosha line reflects a myriad of cultural influences and you’re extremely well-travelled, what are your top 3 most inspiring places to visit? What do you love about these locations?
Scosha: Nothing inspires me more creatively than visiting somewhere new and it doesn’t have to be far away or exotic as long as it is different from my everyday life. Just looking at the way people live, the food they eat, the clothes they wear or the customs they observe are thrilling to me and nourish my creativity. Having said that, there are some places that are like coming home creatively and for me, the top three are Turkey, India and Brazil. I am instantly invigorated by all of them. Turkey is still my most favorite country in terms of almost everything! It is blanketed in this beautiful sherbet haze of colors that is the palate of my dreams and it is forever present in the SCOSHA line. Its amazing cities, architecture, cuisine, markets, textiles, jewelry and breathtaking landscapes just add to the inspiring nature of this incredible country. From the Mediterranean waters of Butterfly Valley to the inland salt lake mountains on the way to Cappadocia it is a hard not to fall in love with.
Jessie Z: All of your pieces are handmade in Brooklyn, do you have a philosophy around local design and production?
Scosha: Philosophically I love the idea of locally sourced and made goods and each of the countries that I mentioned above are incredible examples of often thousand year old traditions of using local resources (raw materials and people). My aim has always been to keep this beautiful concept as a guiding principle within the realities of modern day production. Clearly Brooklyn does not have gold or precious stones, but it does have incredible craftspeople and so we try to use the things we have locally to enhance our jewelry.
Jessie Z: This year marks the 10-year anniversary of your brand, congratulations! How has your line evolved since you started out? Have you made any interesting developments in 2017?
Scosha: Yes 10 years!! I feel like I am on this wonderful journey that keeps changing and evolving with our customers. As the business has grown, I’m proud that we have managed to stay true to our roots. Our macramé braided bracelets that we started selling on day one are still hugely popular, but I’m also thrilled that we’ve been able to develop a full line for every occasion at a price point for everyone. Our menswear line continues to grow as men become more and more comfortable wearing jewelry. We continue to expand our reach way beyond Brooklyn and continue to look for new markets and partnerships in places, and with people, who reflect our brand’s core values. ESQUELETO is a perfect example of this philosophy and we are delighted to be partnering with you again this year.
