Jason Montano // Nothing to See Here

September 1- October 4th in Oakland

From the artist:

I fell in love with still photography as a film student in Vancouver Canada during the summer of 1993. I was accepted to the Vancouver Film School based mostly on my writing, and really, I only cared about writing; scripts, characters, stories, that sort of thing. Characters lived in me and I had to purge them.  And, so it was in a photography class at VFW that I was presented with the idea of still photographs being a story, albeit, a very short story, yet a story none the less. Knowing that moving images are simply a series of still photographs,  it hadn't dawned on me to reduce the narrative to a single image until I was asked to tell a story in one photograph during a Director of Photography coarse. Tell a story; in one sentence, one scene, one idea?! And then, one could also collect them into groupings of style perhaps, or let them fall into a story board of sorts and become part of a larger narrative?! Needless to say, I went to film school and fell in love with still photography. It is, to this day, my favorite form of expression and story telling.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 1st, 2017 between 5:30PM - 8PM at Esqueleto Oakland. Light refreshments will be served.

Cat Bates spent time on Monhegan Island off of the Maine coast as a child and remains strongly influenced by the island's nautical history, rugged landscape, and the resourcefulness and hard work that one needs to live there year-round. As a designer, Cat finds a distinct beauty in utilitarian objects.

Sally England // Baskets

August 4 - October 1 in LA

Sally England's work explores the ancient art form of macramé through the use of unconventional scale, material, and composition. Using her hands as tools, her process is intimate and meditative as she interprets different archetypal symbols, patterns, and shapes. The results invite us to reconsider the artistic potential of the age-old technique, creating a new form of macramé for who we are today. She is inspired by the wabi-sabi of nature, the transformative qualities of architecture and interiors, and the bold shapes and flow of 1970's graphic art. For this new installation, England has pushed the boundaries of what defines a basket by using unconventional materials and three-dimensional elements.

Please join us for the opening reception on Friday August 4th6-8pm in L.A. Light refreshments will be served and beer provided by Fort Point Beer Company.

Afton Love // New Work

August 4th - August 29th in Oakland

“The Object of Empty Space” is a sequel to my last show at Esqueleto, “Through Stone,” which showcased  work made in response to a six-foot sandstone rock I came upon in northern New Mexico. The focus of my attraction to this rock was the beautiful hole eroded through its center. This new series is a playful exploration of that eroded space. In reference to the ancient Chinese Tangrams puzzles, I have designed the work to be reconstructed into new arrangements each time it is shown. This reinterpretation of emptiness as object and shape, and the physical ability to flip, turn and scramble the original form, is meant to draw attention to my initial puzzlement of the hole, and wonderment at its creation.  -Afton

Afton Love is an Oakland based visual artist who works across media, including graphite, beeswax, resin and latex. Her work aims to call attention to our human condition in connection with the natural world, and is influenced by her extensive time spent in the vast landscape of the American West. Love has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from California College of the Arts.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, August 4th, 2017 between 5:30PM - 8PM at Esqueleto Oakland. Light refreshments will be served.

MQuan // California Dreaming

June 10th - July 31st in LA

Ceramicist Michele Quan has crafted a new collection of wall ornaments/plaques, created exclusively for ESQUELETO Los Angeles. Quan refers to the stoneware plaques, which are hand built and painted in her Brooklyn studio, as “portals,” as they are meant to be physical representations of an experience in the form of symbols that are drawn from her growing vocabulary of images. The first collection was made for and recently launched at the store of The Whitney Museum in NYC. Here she turns her focus to the beauty of the West Coast and the imagery that overlaps with the vision of Lauren Wolf’s ESQUELETO.

No two pieces are alike in shape or motifs, and available in sizes from extra small ($115) to large ($325). Each plaque is signed by the artist, hung from a hemp rope and sold with a hand-wrought iron nail.
10% of sales from the show will go to LA Family Home, and organization battling homelessness in Los Angeles county by providing both transitional and permanent housing solutions and linking the homeless population to vital support services. www.lafh.org

KREH MELLICK

June 2nd - August 2nd in Oakland

ESQUELETO is pleased to welcome artist Kreh Mellick to the Oakland gallery this June and July. Mellick's new gouache works on paper are both deeply meditative and highly dynamic, often drawing inspiration from folk art and traditional craft to advance a more personal mythology. Of her work, Kreh says, "the technical attributes of folding paper, employing static motifs and repeated imagery were helpful in establishing an iconography based in tradition. However, it is my effort to relate my interest in woman, domesticity and power of work and home, as well as the unseen magic and energies that whirl around all things living."

Kreh Mellick is an artist living and working in the artist community surrounding Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Her work relates fictions inspired by folklore, nostalgia, and a time passed. Mellick works primarily with gouache on paper, often cut and layered in reassembled environments for her figurative narratives. She deftly combines complex, decorative patterns with airy, minimalist, ethereal landscapes.

Please join us at our Oakland location for the opening reception Friday, June 2nd from 5:30-8pm. Light refreshments will be served.

JEN GARRIDO // fresh paintings

April 1st - June 1st

I construct my paintings and drawings by using a delicate balance of choice and process.

In response to personal narrative and internal dialogue, to the push and pull of the compositions internal gravity, and to the medium of the paint or drawing materials, I project images and forms onto the surface. As I compose, I weave shapes through the picture plane, the gestures I record can read alternatively as flat or as dimensional and sculptural. I favor nature-based forms and rhythms and I am drawn to shapes that tangle, overlap, sit, lean and lay.

As I work through the multiple stages and processes of each piece, by weighing ambiguity with representation, by adding and subtracting, abstracting and transforming, I gradually arrive at the final composition.

PEGGY CROVETTO // new work

February 5th - March 30th

Peggy Crovetto is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Oakland, California. Originally from Ventura, with a seven year detour in South Lake Tahoe, she spent most of her life in California breathing in salty beaches and warm rays from the sun (tubuler, man). Peggy moved to Oakland in 2006 to attend California College of the Arts and emerged victorious with a degree in Photography in 2010. Reaching into the vault of agony that is human life, Peggy is able to draw upon past experiences and apply them to paper in a manner that is intrinsically meditative, not unlike the tedious yet exhilarating process of weaving. Individual threads of gold paint are painstakingly applied in an impossible pattern that is organic in nature that takes on a life of its own. The end result is a pull between positive and negative space; an imaginary setting that evokes silhouettes of landscapes or monsters.

Works on view at Esqueleto Oakland at 482 A 49TH St, Oakland, CA

MEGHAN SHIMEK

December 4th - February 4th

AFTON LOVE: new work

Friday, June 5th 2015 -August 5th, 2015

Afton Love is an Oakland based artist working with themes involving preservation and memory. Her work is developed through a unique process involving graphite powder and wax, creating drawings and installations that articulate a landscape that is both highly specific and nearly abstract. Subtle gradations of tonality evoke both absence and presence, with the power to suggest experience rather than define it. Her drawings and installations range in scale from intimate to ambitiously expansive, imparting a sense of both power and loss in connection to the natural world. One enters Love’s dreamy work as one might enter a forest or take the first step on a path.

Join us for the opening reception of space/time on Friday, June 5th, 2015 between 6PM - 8PM at Esqueleto Oakland.

MATTHEW CRAVEN: space/time

Friday, April 3rd 2015 - June 3rd, 2015

Matthew Craven is a Brooklyn-based artist who uses historical images as a backdrop for his collages and drawings. Craven synthesizes historical images from lost cultures, relics, archaeological remains as well as images from the cosmos, both well known and extremely ambiguous, to create the abstract patterns and narratives in his works. By doing so he reconfigures the original historical narrative and he creates his own myths that induce a new connection to our past.
This series deconstructs old images from text books, and then re-assembles them back onto the book page to create a new history.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, April 3rd, 2015 between 6PM - 9PM at Esqueleto Oakland.

You can also view select works from this series online here.
