Introducing Jennie Kwon

July 11, 2017
by Alexis Adams
We are thrilled to welcome our newest artist to ESQUELETO, Jennie Kwon! Jennie is a native Angeleno, and her effortlessly graceful designs are influenced by all the natural beauty and artistic culture that Southern California has to offer. We love how Jennie came by her career as a jewelry designer. After being raised from early childhood as an artist (she was an accomplished classical violinist) Jennie left her artistic roots behind to become an attorney. However, the birth of her twin daughter and son brought about that creative spark once again. Jennie was so inspired by their perfectly innocent beauty, and soon after launched her namesake jewelry line. Emerald Cut Diamond... Read More

Future Heirlooms

July 3, 2017
by Alexis Adams
One of my favorite parts of the shop is the vintage jewelry section. I love fantasizing about who might have worn each piece – the ceremonies it commemorated, the parties it attended, how many times it was passed down to heirs before ending up in ESQUELETO’s collection. One of the beautiful things about fine jewelry is its enduring nature. This week I speculated about which contemporary pieces might end up as timeless treasures many years down the road. Here I’ve gathered ten items that stand out, because of their unique designs and beautiful materials, as those super special future heirlooms. Three Diamond Ring Lauren Wolf Jewelry The most fought-over heirloom is always... Read More

SPOTLIGHT: Kimberlin Brown

June 27, 2017
by Kayla Ogden
Today I’m so thrilled to add the work of Kimberlin Brown to the collection of beautiful jewelry we select to showcase online to our international audience. Kimberlin’s work is fun and playful in a way that isn’t often seen in fine jewelry. The way that she juxtaposes different stones to create unexpected colorways is so exciting to us. Here’s an interview I did with her recently to help you get to know her: Kayla: Hi Kimberlin! Welcome to the ESQUELETO family. We’re so excited to showcase a collection of your work. For those who don’t know much about you as a designer yet, can you talk a little bit about how you got into jewelry design and... Read More

MQuan’s California Dreaming

June 20, 2017
by Alexis Adams
Celebrated Brooklyn-based ceramic artist Michele Quan has created over 30 wall plaque ‘portals’ inspired by the beauty of the West Coast and the imagery of the dream of California in her mind. Created specifically for installation in the setting of ESQUELETO los angeles, Michele has approached the beauty and mythology of the Golden Coast as filtered through the eyes of a New Yorker. Drawing from her extensive library of symbols that she has curated over the course of her career, Michele has crafted a language of images that combine to describe the ocean, mountains and energy of Los Angeles in visual form. I was able to chat with Michele while she was installing these gorgeous... Read More

Kreh Mellick in Oakland

June 5, 2017
by Danica Stamenic
Kreh Mellick’s new gouache and cut paper works unfold (literally and figuratively) like entrancing fables on the wall. Using imagery and pattern work that draws from ancient through contemporary folk art traditions, these pieces seem both timeless and very much grounded in the present. The fantastical subjects of these paintings a( tower of happy animals or a winged female head,) take on a mythology of their own. None of them reference a known story, but all seem familiar- empowering the viewer to craft their own tale. Her use of the inky gouache is nuanced and varied, creating a range of tonalities that make her work feel incredibly colorful and dynamic, even in grayscale. Most of... Read More

Gemini Inspiration

May 29, 2017
by Alexis Adams
Ah, Gemini – arguably the most dynamic of all the signs. I mean, you do get two personalities in one! Social, curious, intelligent….and also serious, pensive, restless. As a Gemini myself I know firsthand the adaptability and nomadic nature of the twinned sign. To celebrate the new moon in Gemini, I’ve gathered some of my fav items in the shop – light and dark, whimsical and serious, there’s something in here to please both sides of the ever-changing Gemini personality. Also, don’t miss our special event with designer Emily Hirsch of Talon and zodiac + tarot expert Marty Windahl in the Los Angeles store! Ojai native Emily is known for her intricately carved zodiac-themed signet... Read More

Vintage Trunk Show

May 23, 2017
by Alexis Adams
This coming weekend we welcome Marilyn Weiss of Marilyn & Co. Antiques to our Oakland shop for a trunk show, and we couldn’t be more excited. There’s nothing quite like the exquisite craftsmanship found in these antique jewels – they really don’t make ‘em like they used to! We love fantasizing about the incredible histories that may lay behind each of these pieces; whose fingers may have worn them, which forgotten artist’s hands created them. Here are a few of my favorite pieces currently in our shops, each a miniature masterwork that exemplifies the artistry and design hallmarks their era. Read through for a quick primer on antique jewelry styles, and join us on Saturday... Read More
