Both shops are hosting art openings in February, and we invite you to join us for the opening receptions for these two incredibly talented artists. Megan Donegan’s work is figural and mythic, incorporating animal forms with spiritual, natural elements in grayscale graphite. Rachel Kaye’s work uses abstracted forms to interrogate the relations between color and motion using colored pencil. Both artists use drawing as a meditative outlet and a means to explore the subconscious. If you’re in Oakland or LA, stop by and enjoy the work!
Megan Donegan in LA February 16th – April 1st
Oakland-based artist Meagan Donegan creates deeply emotive artworks which feature symbolic imagery of animals, twin elements, ancestral influences and the interplay of light and shadow. Using primarily graphite as her medium, Donegan has created a new series themed around the idea of awakening. From the artist: I use animals as my main subject matter because they have a purity and beauty to me that help me observe without a narrative. In this deep trust, my heart opens. Here I can break down shape into its simplest form of light and shadow and at the same time observe my singular interpretation based on my own life experience and ancestral influences. It is during this paring down process that new layers come into awareness and l finally become still. Here I am left empty and can witness the process of creation itself. Rachel Kaye is a draftswoman and painter who also dabbles in sculpture and textile design. These colored pencil drawings are a practice in meditation: exploring color, hidden symbols and motion; and thinking about the seasons and their change in mood. Drawing is just a portion of Kaye's practice, but it has always been at the core of her work. She often relies on it as a constant medium when in pause from other works in progress. Rachel Kaye was born in 1981 and resides in San Francisco. She graduated with her BFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, CA. Kaye has exhibited nationally and internationally in Paris, Tokyo, San Francisco, Oakland, New York, Los Angeles & Palm Beach. Kaye has collaborated with her husband, artist Jay Nelson on exhibitions as well, blurring the line of artistic ownership and site-specific sculpture. She recently completed a large-scale mural for the Hook Fish Restaurant in the Outer Sunset of San Francisco. And has completed murals for Chandran Gallery and Facebook (Menlo Park CA). Her work has been featured in the Huffington Post, Refinery 29, Artsy & East Bay Express.
