IN THE GALLERIES

This month we open three new gallery shows, in each of our locations. Exploring themes of surreal, fragmented narratives and wild, animalistic emotions, these exhibits showcase exciting new work by three of our favorite California-based artists. Finn_banner First up, for the First Friday art walk ESQUELETO Oakland is pleased to present a solo show from XO Finn! Finn's wild, graphic animal portraits inhabit light, dark, and all the shadows in between, both literal and figurative. Artful cuts and crops paired with splashes of color lend an edge to her work creating emphasis and moments of surprise.

Finn's highly detailed pen and ink work is a study in nature's spectrum of a kingdom of animal expressions. It celebrates the minutiae of all species of howls and growls, and translates them into a meditative practice of line, form, and caprice. Her illustrations are inspired by the totemic romance of medieval bestiaries and mythical lore. Finn is an autodidact who learned art as a path to empathy, meticulousness, and universality; she believes that anyone brave, disciplined, and curious can themselves make beautiful things.

Please join us for an opening reception for the artist on Friday, April 5th, from 5 to 7pm.  Light refreshments will be provided.

Works on view April 5th - May 31st.

In our new Los Feliz location we welcome Los Angeles-based artist and filmmaker Nat Moonhill. The opening reception for Moonhill’s solo show of allegorical, narrative pen and ink illustrations will be held on April 11 th in conjunction with our grand opening party!

From the artist: “These drawings are fragments of an imagined illuminated manuscript known as ‘The Dreaming Book.’ Inspired by Carl Jung’s ‘Liber Novus,’ in which he documented the landscape and characters of his unconscious, they portray aspects of my own personal cosmology. To me, the imaginal realm is a place as real as the daytime world – the only true difference being the lack of physical materiality. These pages torn from an imaginary book are artifacts brought back from the other side, they are my attempt to make the immaterial beings, places and stories of my own unconscious take material form in this reality. Conceiving of them as pieces of a sacred book is my way of honoring the inner world as a place of power, beauty and mystery.”

Please join us Thursday, April 11th from 6 to 8pm for the opening reception with the artist, in conjunction with ESQUELETO Los Feliz’s grand opening party.

Works on view April 11th to May 31st.

And finally, in the Echo Park shop we host a solo show of gorgeously textured and richly colored paintings by Sophie Lourdes Knight, opening April 13th.

Knight is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in painting. In the studio her material concerns are on canvas using acrylics, oil pastels, and charcoal with a variety of tools to build up a history of marks and a narrative arch, bending between abstraction and representation across desolate landscapes, particularly focusing on the process of painting itself as the principal indicator of action and emotion. She received a BTEC in Art & Design from the Wimbledon College of Art in 2011 and a BFA in Painting & Drawing from California College of the Arts in 2014, and recently completed a residency at the prestigious Golden Foundation.

Please join us for an opening reception with the artist on Saturday April 13th  from 3 to 6pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Works on view March 20th to May 31st.
