Glittery History: Gemstone Symbolism & Mythology

January 7, 2019
by Jessie Zechnowitz
Can you believe it’s already 2019? Time flies… but jewelry is immortal. The rare alchemy of nature forges glittering gemstones that have captured the human imagination for thousands of years. Let’s take a look back among the ages at some of the most prized and honored gemstones and what they symbolized for our ancestors. MOONSTONE Since it’s a feldspar, moonstone is a fairly soft stone – which may be why it’s referred to as the stone of tenderness and is thought of as a heart-opening aid. Ancient India’s astrologers believed that wearing this stone was a way to gain the favor and friendship of the moon! RAINBOW MOONSTONE RING By Lauren Wolf Wax-on moon goddesses,... Read More

In the Galleries

October 22, 2018
by Jessie Zechnowitz
This season in the galleries we feature two artists who draw their inspiration from flora and fauna. In Oakland, local artist Bella Bigsby takes us “Into the Woods” for a forest frolic. On our woodland jaunt we encounter enigmatic owls, a misty copse of pine trees, and the perfection of a single feather. In LA, flora abounds in the work of Chicago-based artist Sara Wenokur, whose candy-colored renderings look sweet enough to eat. Sara’s fanciful botanicals showcase blue cacti, purple palms, and array of biomorphic forms. INTO THE WOODS by Bella Bigsby October 5th – December 3rd in Oakland Bella Bigsby is a self-taught artist. Now a resident of Oakland she grew up in... Read More

New Work: Celine D’Aoust

by Jessie Zechnowitz
We are happy to present a new collection of Celine D’Aoust jewelry! These new designs heavily feature Celine’s signature stone, tourmaline, along with other gorgeous stones including diamonds, opals, and moonstones. Her striking designs have a contemporary feel that fully utilize the arts of metalwork and stone-setting. All of Celine D’Aoust’s jewelry is handmade at her studio in Brussels, with gems sourced from Jaipur that are hand-selected by Celine herself! The artist’s work is activated by inspiration from the natural world and the symbolism associated with the stones she utilizes in her work. TOURMALINE TOTEM RING Pink tourmalines are bezel set in warm 14k gold with... Read More

In the Galleries

The current offerings in the galleries are ruminations on the structures of our natural world. In L.A., Todd Ryan White employs lush, electric color to render caverns, frondescent landscapes, and the human form. White experiments with modes of framing and layering to create depth and focus the viewer’s attention inward. Over in Oakland, Skye Schuchman pares down all form, eliminating three-dimensional space and connecting the proverbial dots to reveal maps of abstract crystallographic structures. Both artists ponder the power of creation on an organic level, although their manifestations couldn’t be more formally distinctive. Through their eyes we see both the pulsing, vibrant, fecund... Art Deco Inspired Pieces

July 30, 2018
by JESSIE ZECHNOWITZ
The term “Art Deco” originated in 1920’s Paris, and is short for “Arts Décoratifs” – so it follows that the style is all about DECOration, decadence, and adornment. One of the most fashion-forward embodiments of the Art Deco genre is jewelry, a medium where the tenants of fine craftsmanship, geometric patterns, bright colors, and precious materials all come together – voilà! We love the era’s taste for glamour, and we have some stunning vintage Deco pieces on offer that will have you feeling like an absolute Modern Woman. ART DECO DIAMOND RING Pull out all the stops with this platinum bit of decadence! Like mythological Andromeda (translating... Read More
