Luana was born and raised in Hawaii, where she lived a simple and creative life, always close to nature. When moving to the San Francisco Bay Area to earn her BFA in Jewelry/Metalsmithing, she quickly noticed the dramatic contrast of a densely populated city to the lush, unhurried pace of tropical Hawaii. Realizing her strong affiliation with nature and organic growth patterns, she now finds even the smallest flower or blade of grass more precious than ever. She expresses her deep and abiding love of nature’s tiniest wonders through her artwork, finding ways within her work as a jeweler to amplify the beauty of simple natural objects and bring attention to our emotions. This is reinforced by her passion to use found objects and renewable materials. Luana currently enjoys teaching, traveling internationally, creating one of a kind works for exhibition and managing her small jewelry studio from her home in Hawaii.

Modern jewelry has evolved significantly from its origins. Traditionally, we wore jewelry for particular reasons- to show one's status, age or origins; to feel comfort, protection or strength; to remind us of a place, person, or memory. In modern day, I wonder what our motivations are to adorn ourselves. The intentions of many are to display wealth, or to enhance appearance. I question what it is we find sentimental and precious; amongst all the pride and monetary distractions, can we distinguish what we hold close to our heart? I would like to replace the glitz and glamor of the world with simple natural objects, things just could just walk past in an ordinary day.  The simplicity of slowing down to notice how a plant grows, analyze natures universal design patterns, view how the world is constructed.  I would like to re-arrange how we view what is 'precious' and open up our eyes to the beauty that is right in front of us. Gems, diamonds and gold come from this earth, and so do insect wings, leaves and lichen. I wonder again... what is precious?

Instead of a piece of jewelry representing money in the weight of gold or karat of diamond, it should be a reminder of our emotions and surroundings. When worn, these treasures remind us of the things that make our heart grow warm, skip a beat, or let us wander into dreams.
