We are very pleased to show Meghan's dreamy work at the Oakland shop again! A Michigan native, Meghan "integrates...the memory of quiet snowy nights" into her work, and you can see the influence. Soft pillows of roving wool are woven and transformed into Meghan's signature cloud-like wall hangings. Just in time to set a cozy, hygge holiday vibe in the shop!
From the artist:
Meghan Bogden Shimek makes textural woven wall hangings, installations, and sculptures. By referencing movement, healing, distress, and loss, she formalizes the coincidental and emphasizes the conscious process of composition that is behind the works. The thought processes, which are supposedly private, highly subjective and unfiltered in their references to dream worlds, are frequently revealed as assemblages.
Her woven works feature unexpected connections which make it possible to reflect on uncomfortable feelings and self healing. By questioning the concept of movement, she creates work through labour-intensive processes which can be seen explicitly as a personal exorcism ritual. She explores movement through performance with the fibers, allowing them to fall into an indeterminate pattern that reveals the beauty of vulnerability. The artist also considers movement as a metaphor of continuous loss.
Meghan Bogden Shimek currently lives and works in Oakland, CA.
Join us for the opening reception on Friday, December 1st, 2017 between 5:30PM - 8PM light refreshments will be served.
